Sport: Fabregas is Extraordinary - Xavi

Barcelona experienced midfielder Xavi has hailed team-mate Cesc Fabregas following his fine start to the 2013-14 campaign and feels the former Arsenal man's versatility is vital for the Blaugrana.

Fabregas was the subject of a failed transfer bid from Manchester United over the summer after being given assurances by Gerardo Martino that he would have an important role to play for the Liga champions this season.

The 26-year-old has since started his side's title defence in top form and has been involved in six of Barcelona's 11 league goals so far, and Xavi has paid tribute to his compatriot's abilities at both creating and scoring goals for both club and country.

"Cesc is a different type of midfielder we usually see at Barca. He always adapts, he can score and he’s good for the team," Xavi told reporters.

"He’s an extraordinary and very versatile player who can play in the midfield or as a forward.

"He’s capable of giving assists, come in for the follow-up play and get in the area and score."

Both Xavi and Fabregas are currently preparing for Spain's World Cup qualifier with Finland on Friday.

Sport: 'Intense' Bale Pressure Forced Real Madrid Move

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has described Gareth Bale's desire to join Real Madrid as “intense”, saying the Welshman's “state of mind” meant Spurs had to sell him.

The 24-year-old completed a world-record €100 million move to the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, having previously failed to show up to training for the north London club during protracted negotiations.

Afraid of having an unhappy player on their books, Tottenham finally concluded a deal for Bale a day before the deadline, and Villas-Boas says the club were put under heavy pressure to sell by both the player and Madrid.

“The pressure we were subjected to by the player has been intense,” said the Portuguese after a meeting of top coaches at Uefa's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

“The influence of Real Madrid has been very big and you get to a point where you have to consider if it's feasible not to accept an offer and whether you can press on with a player in that state of mind.

“Obviously, we should be happy with the transfer fee that was paid. Players want to win championships and I believe that with Gareth that is within reach.

“At the end of the day, it's up to a player to decide if he wants to stay or wants to go.”

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had previously stated that the club had no intention of selling the two-time PFA Player of the Year, but felt he would not be committed had they kept him at White Hart Lane against his will.

“Such has been the attention from Real Madrid and so great is Gareth's desire to join them, that we have taken the view that the player will not be sufficiently committed to our campaign in the current season,” read a statement from the Spurs chief following Bale's departure.

Villas-Boas, meanwhile, also went on to criticise the scheduling of the transfer window, and believes it should close before the season starts and therefore ridding clubs of any uncertainty.

“The clubs like it as it is but the coaches are of the opinion that the market should be closed earlier,” he added.

“The coaches need time to prepare their teams for the season. Most coaches would like it to be open less time and close earlier; obviously we will have to have further meetings."

Sport: Gerrard Warns Don't write off England's World Cup chances

England Captain Steven Gerrard has warned against writing off England's World Cup hopes and insists Roy Hodgson's men can cause a surprise in Brazil next summer.

As the Three Lions prepare for two crucial qualifying matches against Moldova and Ukraine, FA chairman Greg Dyke claimed on Wednesday that they stand little chance of winning the tournament - should they qualify.

But Gerrard believes the team is good enough to go to the World Cup and make the nation proud - though he insists the players are fully focused on achieving qualification first.

"I don't think we're as weak as has been suggested," the England captain told reporters.

"Realistically, everyone in the room knows we're not going to be one of the bookies' favourites to win the World Cup.

"It doesn't mean we can't get there and have a successful tournament to make the country proud. But we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. Our priority is to get there first.

"To qualify is the challenge. We want to qualify for the World Cup, go there and make the nation proud. We can do that without winning it.

"Playing at a World Cup is the pinnacle of any footballer's dream as a kid - especially in Brazil."

Sport: Ibrahimovic Never Consider leaving PSG

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has insisted that he never had any intention of leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
The Sweden international was briefly linked with a return to Juventus before the Serie A champions signed Carlos Tevez as the arrival of Edinson Cavani at PSG cast doubts over Ibrahimovic's future at the club.
However, the powerful attacker has made it clear that a transfer was never an option.
"I always knew that I would not leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer. The club takes care of me very well," Ibrahimovic said at a press conference. 
"Of course, you never know what will happen, but I never really considering leaving PSG."
The 31-year-old has a contract with the Ligue 1 champions until June 2015.

Messi Pays €5 Million In Tax Fraud Case

Lionel Messi and his father Jorge have filed a “corrective payment” with the Spanish authorities amid allegations of tax fraud.

The pair are alleged to have filed incorrect tax returns between 2006 and 2009 and a court located near Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday that a payment of just over €5 million has been received.

The statement added that the payment meant there was little chance of Messi and his father withholding further monies “during the legal process of a pending tax fraud trial”.

The sale of Messi's image rights had been hidden using a complex web of shell companies in Uruguay, Belize, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, the prosecutor's office for tax crimes in Catalonia said.

"I never take care of that stuff myself and neither does my father," the 26-year-old player said in July.

"We have our lawyers and our wealth managers to take care of that and we trust them and they will sort this out," he added.

"The truth is that I don't have a clue about all this and that is why we have people taking care of it."

Messi has been resident in Barcelona since 2000 and gained Spanish citizenship in 2005.

He is one of the world's highest-paid athletes and earns just over $20 million a season in wages and bonuses, according to Forbes magazine.

Man Sue Ex-Girlfriend For Abusing His Sperm

A Bosnian man is suing his ex-girlfriend for allegedly “abusing” his sperm so she could bear a child with European genes.

41-year-old Ahbabovic, who is also a Malaysian permanent resident, is a commercial director of a private limited company in Malaysia.

Ervin Ahbabovic filed the suit in the High Court Registry through Messrs The Law Chambers of Mohamad Fauzi on Friday.

The suit was made known to the press on Tuesday. In the statement of claim, Ervin said he entered into a relationship with the 29-year-old in the hope that he would establish a “God-blessed” union.

The 41-year-old commercial director of a private limited company alleged that they had lived together and were blessed with a baby boy born on Feb 7, 2010.

Ervin said that at the time, he hoped the relationship would develop and lead to a marriage.

The defendant, however, apparently did not reciprocate his feelings and perceived their relationship negatively.

After the birth of their son, Ervin alleged the defendant constantly looked for faults and quarreled with him, creating a harsh and disharmonious environment.

Ervin, who was also a business consultant for several companies since 1995, claimed he eventually realized that her sexual desire and dominant attitude towards him crossed normal boundaries.

He alleged that she demanded sexual intercourse with six times a day, for approximately one hour each time.

He added that she constantly threatened to commit suicide if her sexual desire was not fulfilled or if he left her.

Ervin claimed that the defendant became violent and stabbed his left forearm on Sept 3, last year.

He said he felt humiliated, subdued, traumatised, extremely stressed and shocked because the defendant not only chased him out from the house but also prohibited him from seeing his son.

After the incident, Ervin said he contacted the defendant to reconcile for their son’s benefit, but she told him that he was merely a “tool” and wanted his sperm to have a better offspring.

The plaintiff is seeking monetary compensation of RM600,000 for the usage of his sperm for the purpose of getting a child in a wrongful way and also to have him recognised as the father of their son in the birth certificate as well as costs and further relief deemed fit and proper by the court.

Ervin’s counsel Nasir Yusof told the media that the case management had been fixed on Oct 1.

Nasir said he would serve the writ of summons to the defendant within 14 days beginning on Wednesday, Sept 4.

Female Law Graduate Led Seven-Man Robbery Gang

A woman called Chioma Ezekwesiri led a seven-man robbery gang and was smashed by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

The robbery suspects were arrested while attempting to rob Bolatito Hotel, Kola Bus Stop, Ijaiye, Lagos.

It was gathered that Chioma said she arranged for the guns with Raymond Chukwuka, a.k.a. Stubborn, which they were to use for the operation, which she claimed was a land matter, whereas the police said that their mission was allegedly to rob a male customer of the hotel, who sells fertilizer, of about N8 million.

Other suspected members of the gang are: Amadi Igwe, 41, Raymond Chukwuka, 24, Ignatius Okeredi, 27, Michael Madu, 52, and Okechukwu Jerome, 28, and a yet-to-be identified member who is at large.

The alleged robbery operation, according to the police, was foiled by some staff of the hotel, who promptly made a distress call to SARS operatives.

The law enforcement agents were said to have surrounded the hotel, and later searched all its occupants. It was in the process that two locally made guns and 12 live ammunition were recovered from the robbery suspects.

“We received a distress call from a staff of Bolatito Hotel, who said they suspected some people around the hotel. The Special Anti-Robbery Squad moved in, surrounded the place and demanded to search everybody. It was in the process that two guns and 12 live ammunition were recovered in Chioma’s car. This led to the arrest of all her gang members,” a top police source told P.M.NEWS.

Following their arrest and conclusion of investigation, the police took them to court.

Chioma, 35, who claimed to be a Law graduate from the University of Lagos, was remanded in prison custody along with six other members of her gang by Magistrate A.O. Komolafe of the Magistrates’ Court, Ikeja.

They are facing a three count charge of robbery, conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

Chioma claimed that she graduated from UNILAG in 1999, was called to the bar in 2000, and owns a Non-Governmental  Organisation, Youth of All Nations Empowerment Association. But authorities of the University of Lagos said she did not graduate from that institution.

An officer of the school, who craved anonymity, said Chioma cannot claim to be an alumnus of the university if she cannot provide her matriculation number.

“The fact that she claimed to have gone to Law School with the first batch is not substantial enough. UNILAG usually sends graduating students at a stretch, not in batches. My position on the issue is that she did not graduate from UNILAG, and so she was not our student,” the officer said.

Chioma’s claim of being called to the Bar was also debunked by Barrister Tunji Busari of Cognate Solicitors, who explained that “we have a directory for all lawyers. We have all their names with the year they were called to bar, with their NBA registration numbers. When I checked through her name in the directory, I could not find her name in my record book.”

When our reporter called Mr. J.E. Joshua, the chairman of Youth of All Nations Empowerment Association, he denied that Chioma is the founder of the association.

“She just participated in a charity work which the association embarked on in April, and promised to participate fully in other projects of the NGO. But we decided to stop working with her when we realised that she wasn’t a straight forward person. She is not working with us,” Joshua stated.

Woman Raped By Her Pastor in church during ‘spiritual bath’ in Abeokuta

A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State,  has been ordered to be remanded in prison for allegedly raping a woman while bathing in his church backyard.

Pastor Sobowale, who  was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday, was accused of  raping one Dupe Makinde, 30, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while taking a spiritual bath  allegedly  recommended by the pastor.

The prosecuting counsel, Paul Etusi, told the court that the accused grabbed the complainant while she was in  a bathroom within the church premises and raped her.

Etusi said the complainant had already put the  soap on her face as she began bathing when the pastor suddenly entered the bathroom, grabbed and  raped her with soap on her face.

According to Etusi, the accused had told Mrs. Makinde that he had a vision about the her and asked her  to come for deliverance in his church.

He said: “He asked the woman to come to the church to take a spiritual bath for her deliverance,  but, while the complainant was taking her bath, the accused barged into the  bathroom, grabbed the woman and  raped her.

“The accused  has committed an offence contrary to section 357 and punishable under section 358 of criminal code of law of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.”

Magistrate A. Araba after listening to the prosecuting counsel, ordered that  the accused be remanded  in prison till he gets advice from the Director of Public Prosecution and adjourned the case till September 16,2013.

President Barack Obama Set To Meet With Russia Gay Right Advocate

President Barack Obama is set to meet with Russian civil society leaders Friday, an event likely to touch on the sensitive subject of gay rights in the nation amid tensions over Syria.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law passed by parliament that bans the public discussion of gay rights and relationships where children might hear it. Violators can be fined and, if they are foreigners, deported.

Obama, who has advocated gay rights and same-sex marriage, has said that "nobody's more offended than me" by the Russian law.

Critics say the Russian law is so vague that someone can be prosecuted for wearing a rainbow T-shirt or holding hands in public with someone of the same sex.

At the event Friday in Russia, Obama is due to meet with representatives of groups that support a range of causes, including media freedom, protection of the environment and rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individual people.

The controversy over the law is one of several disputes between the United States and Russia, including the question of possible military action against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Moscow's decision to shelter National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

Obama and Putin met briefly Thursday at the G20 summit meeting that is taking place in St. Petersburg at the moment, shaking hands and exchanging a few words. Officials say the two leaders could have a longer meeting on the margins of the event.

Obama had previously canceled a summit meeting with Putin scheduled around the G20 event after Russia gave temporary asylum to Snowden, whom the United States wants to prosecute for leaking documents about NSA surveillance programs

No More Molue Buses On Lagos Island..

      The Lagos State government has banned commuter buses, popularly known as Molue, from plying routes on Lagos Island in Lagos.

As a result of this development, no Molue bus is expected to cross any of the three bridges linking the Mainland part of Lagos with the Island. These are the Third Mainland, Eko and Carter bridges.

The state government insisted that the decision was taken in the best interest of residents as well as its determination to ensure adequate monitoring of commuter bus operators regarding compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Babatunde Edu, made this known at a stakeholder’s meeting with the branch chairmen of the Lagos Urban Bus Owners Association of Nigeria (LUBON) – operators of Molue buses in the state – at Oshodi.

He indicated that the enforcement of the directive was supposed to have come into effect since 19 August, 2013.

“The Lagos State government was supposed to commence the enforcement of the order last month, but being a responsive and responsible government which believes in enlightenment before enforcement, it, therefore, decided to shift the enforcement to  this month,” he said.

Mr Babatunde further added that LASTMA had been mandated to ensure strict compliance of Lagosians with the ban, as it would not hesitate to impound any bus deemed to have flouted the ban starting from the first week of September.

According to him, prohibited routes and places for Molue buses in the state include Apongbon, CMS, Ebute Ero, Iddo, Idumota, Obalende, among others.

ASUU Strike Sent Female Student Into Prostitution In Kaduna

As the lingering disagreement between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU remains without solution, DailyPost has learnt that female students in Kaduna Metropolis now take solace in prostitution.

It was gathered that the numbers of those currently in the business within the state has increased tremendously since the strike action began two months ago.

Commercial sex workers in the state are mostly spotted along Rabah Road, Muhammadu Buhari Way, Constitution Road and Independent Road, all in Kaduna metropolis, while others have relocated to Obalande area, along Cameroon Road where they rent rooms in small hotels for their illicit business.

Others were seen around Gwari Avenue Road, Barnawa and otherhotels in the state capital where they meet their teeming customers.

Some students decided to go into the business to enable them meet their needs till the strike is being called off.

A final year student of one of the federal universities who doesn’t want her name mentioned hailed ASUU for the strike, saying that the money she would realize from the business will sustain her when school resumes.

According to her, “The strike, though will delay my graduation, it’s helping me to gather funds for my upkeep when the strike is finally suspended.”

Another lady who gave her name as Joy, said, “we contribute money to pay for hotel rooms and we sometimes hire the rooms for several weeks to do the business.

“Most of us do not have anybody that will take care of us and we even have our younger ones to cater for. So we have to do this business anytime we are on strike or holiday to survive.”

Asked when she intends to stop the business, she said, “anytime the strike is suspended, I will go back to school. But, I hope to stop this business as soon as I get a job after graduation.”

When contacted, General secretary of the Association of Nigeria Prostitutes, ANP, Jessica Elvis confirmed that since the strike began members of the association have increased.

According to her, “The report we got from across the nation indicates that new members, mostly students have joined the business since the ASUU strike began two months back.”

“The latest report from Kaduna shows that 200 new members joined the business last month.
