Christmas celebration and wearing of Santa Claus hat banned in Brunei, South East Asia

  All forms of Christmas celebration, including the wearing of Santa Claus hats have been banned in Brunei, South East Asia. Public participation by either its Muslim or non-Muslim populace has been declared a serious offense which could lead to five years jail sentence.

After objections by the non-Muslim population which comprises of 32 percent of their 420,000 population, permission was given for them to celebrate in their own little communities, but strictly without the involvement of the Muslims.

First transgender partners in Ecuador expecting first baby

This couple is about to become the first transgender partners in Ecuador and they are three months pregnant.

A 33- year old transgender woman, Diane who used to be a ‘man’ is expecting a baby with her partner of two years. Her partner, Fernando who is also a trangender, now male but used to be female. Neither of them has gone through reconstructive surgery to change their sexual organs.

They both met online two years ago and were happy to share the news with the rest of the world via Facebook.

Nigerian deported from UK narrates his story

The United Kingdom has deported 50 Nigerians after having committed different offenses while in the country. The deportees, made of 44 males and six females arrived into Nigeria aboard a chartered B767 aircraft belonging to PITAN Airways.

The federal government had recently expressed concern over the UK’s plan to deport some 29,000 of its nationals demanding that due process be followed before any Nigerian is sent back from the UK.

Obasanjo congratulated Jonathan for successful handover to Buhari

Almost six months after the change of government, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has for the first time congratulated former President Goodluck Jonathan for successfully handing over to President Muhammadu Buhari and commended him for continuing to have faith in Nigeria.

Obasanjo’s commendation was contained in his reply to President Jonathan’s earlier notification of his plans to establish a foundation following the end of his term in office as president.

Jonathan had in a letter dated September 22, 2015, formally notified Obasanjo of his intention to set up a foundation to promote good works.

Obama pardons Thanksgiving's "Turkey"

President Barack Obama “pardoned” the TOTUS — the Turkey of the United States — in an annual White House Thanksgiving ceremony on Wednesday.

“America is after all a country of second chances, and this turkey has earned a second chance to live out the rest of his life comfortably,” Mr. Obama said.

Then, the president waved his hands over the fortunate fowl named Abe in a gesture that resembled a blessing, while the bird clucked and cooed.

Roli Bode George appointed as acting Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA

MRS Roli Bode George has been appointed as the first woman acting Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, following the retirement of Alhaji Ahmadu Giade who has bowed out after serving 10 years in the agency.

The chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade, on Wednesday 25th of November retired after 10 years in charge after serving two 5-year terms.

This was made known by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Mitchel Ofoyeju announced this in Lagos.

It said Giade, who served two terms of five years each, handed over the affairs of the NDLEA to the Director- General (DG) of the Agency, Mrs Roli Bode-George, The News Nigeria reports.

According to the statement the former chairman inspected a guard of honour after which he presented a new flag to the D-G.

Police: S. Korea professor forces student to eat faeces

A South Korean court on Thursday jailed a university professor for 12 years for forcing a student to eat human faeces and drink urine during a two-year period of physical and psychological assault.

The sentence was two years more than had been demanded by prosecutors, reflecting, the court said, “unimaginable atrocities” committed by the 52-year-old professor that had amounted “to a sort of psychological murder”.

The professor, identified only by his surname Jang, was arrested in July after his victim — a design student now aged 29 — attempted to commit suicide to escape his ordeal.

Payment of N5,000 stipend to unemployed youths begins next year —FG

The All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government, yesterday, said the payment of the N5,000 stipend to the unemployed Nigerian youths will commence next year.

It regretted that the payment could not take off immediately because it was not included in this year’s budget.

Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalong, revealed this yesterday in Abuja when he paid a condolence visit to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, at the national secretariat in Abuja on the demise of Prince Abubakar Audu, the late governorship candidate of the party in Kogi State election.

Dalong, who spoke with journalists, assured that APC government would also create more jobs to fulfill its campaign promises.

Martins wanted on loan by Sunderland and Newcastle

Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Sunderland have been linked with the signing of Nigerian striker, Obafemi Martins, on a short-term loan deal in the MLS off-season.

Man City’s Nasri out for three months

“What doesn’t kill you make you stronger. I will be back better than ever see you in 3 months,”

Manchester City’s French midfielder Samir Nasri will be out for a further three months due to a hamstring injury, he revealed on Thursday.

“What doesn’t kill you make you stronger. I will be back better than ever see you in 3 months,” Nasri wrote in an Instagram post alongside a picture of him looking pensive as he rested on a pair of crutches.

Nasri, 28, has not played for City since making a substitute appearance in their 5-1 Premier League defeat of Bournemouth on October 17.

He was thought to be closing on a return to action, but will now be out until February.

24-year-old final year Poly student murdered in Imo State

Imo State Police  Command has arrested a three-man gang that gruesomely murdered 24-year-old final year civil engineering student of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, Innocent Ndukwe.

Speaking after parading the suspects before journalists yesterday in Owerri, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, disclosed that soon after slaughtering their hapless victim, the hoodlums stole his Pathfinder Sports Utility Vehicle with registration number, Lagos KRD 109 BP, two plasma television sets, one home theatre and assorted personal effects.

“Soon after getting credible information about the heinous act, the police control room quickly alerted operations of the command and they immediately searched the entire state.

ABTU student electrocuted in Bauchi

Tragedy struck  yesterday at Gwallameji area of  Bauchi State, following the electrocution of a 25-year-old student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Michael Loya.

Vanguard gathered that the student was electrocuted while trying to spread wet clothes on a naked wire in his compound at Gentle Villa, Gwallameji.

But Police Public Relation Officer of Bauchi State command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said Loya was electrocuted while trying to reconnect electricity illegally in his compound.

Senate okays $200m World Bank loan for Lagos

The Senate yesterday approved $200 million World Bank loan for the Lagos State government.

This followed the submission and consideration of the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, headed by Senator Kabiru Gaya, and seven others.

President Muhammadu Buhari wrote the Senate on September 29, requesting a special approval of Lagos State Development Policy Operation III under the Federal Government External Borrowing Plan (2015-2017) for the third tranche of $200 million of the DPO from the World Bank.

The World Bank Development Policy Operation (DPO) is a budget support facility used basically to finance deficit in annual budgets of governments to enhance the capacity of beneficiary government to execute key projects.

Two female bombers strike in Kano

According to The Nations, Fourteen persons died yesterday when two female suicide bombers detonated explosives at the Kano GSM Village.

Over 100 others were injured in the blasts, according to the National Emergency management Agency (NEMA).

The Nigeria Red Cross, NEMA, Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other stakeholders were on hand to evacuate the injured to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Nassarawa Hospital and Murtala Muhammad Hospital.

Those with minor injuries were treated and discharged immediately, NEMA spokesman Sani Datti, said yesterday.

Flights from US to Paris diverted after anonymous threats

Air France said in a statement that one flight, from Los Angeles International Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris was diverted to Salt Lake City International Airport on Tuesday night. At about the same time a second flight took off from Dulles International Airport outside Washington and was diverted to Halifax on Canada's East Coast.

Gunfire in north Paris as police hunt shooting suspect

Shots rang out in the Saint Denis area of northern Paris early on Wednesday as special police forces launched an operation to catch one of the suspects from Friday night's shooting in the French capital, a police source told Reuters.

French TV station BFMTV said some police had been wounded during the operation.

President Barack Obama says GOP incitement on Syria refugees 'needs to stop'

President Barack Obama lashed out Wednesday at Republicans who insist on barring Syrian refugees from entering the U.S., deeming their words offensive and insisting "it needs to stop."

"Apparently they're scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America," Obama said.

Mocking GOP leaders for thinking they're tough, Obama said overblown rhetoric from Republicans could be a potent recruitment tool for the Islamic State group. He insisted the U.S. process for screening refugees for possible entry into the U.S. is rigorous and said the U.S. doesn't make good decisions "based on hysteria" or exaggerated risk.

Senate asks JAMB to extend validity of results to 3 years

According to Vanguard, The Senate, yesterday, directed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, to begin to extend the validity of its results to a period of three years.

This was even as it ordered the board to immediately stop its policy of re-assigning candidates to schools they never applied to, saying such policy was contrary to the act establishing the board.

To this end, results obtained from the board by candidates seeking admission into universities are expected to last for three years.

Boko Haram: Army destroys terrorists’ rocket making factory, arrests another kingpin

The Nigerian Army has arrested yet another Boko Haram kingpin after making public a list of 100 wanted terrorists.

Troops of the 21 Brigade of the Army also destroyed a bomb and rocket making factory used by the terrorists in Borno state.

Lagos Lawmakers visit mudslide site, urge government to do more on safety

The Lagos State House of Assembly Adhoc Committee on the recent mudslide in Magodo area of the state says the government needs to do more on the safety of residents

Court adjourns Dasuki's case to November 23

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday adjourned the case of retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, till Nov 23.

The Judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, who adjourned the case following an oral application from the Solicitor-General of the Federation, Mr Taiwo Abidogun.

Ademola held that the adjournment would enable the Attorney General of the Federation appear and explain the siege on Dasuki’s Abuja residence.

A source in the Presidency made the disclosure adding that Buhari had already compiled the list of the proposed advisers, Daily Trust reports.

“You know the ministers have just been inaugurated. The key appointments which Mr. President is set to announce any moment from now are those of his special advisers,” the source said.

Paris attack: Latest developments

Police are hunting a suspect they believe was “directly involved” in Friday’s attacks in Paris, in which seven suicide attackers died. They are searching for Salah Abdeslam, 26, who is thought to have rented the black Volkswagen Polo used in the attack on the Bataclan concert hall. Salah is the brother of Ibrahim Abdeslam, who detonated his suicide vest outside the Comptoir Voltaire cafe, seriously injuring a bystander and killing himself.

There have been 150 police raids across France overnight. Anti-terrorism raids have taken place under state of emergency powers in Toulouse, Grenoble, Jeumont (on the French-Belgian border), and the Paris suburb of Bobigny. Several arrests have been reported, with buildings searched. Weapons were reportedly seized in Toulouse. In Lyon, French media reported that police have seized a rocket launcher and arrested five suspects.

Paris prosecutors identified two more suicide bombers

Paris prosecutors have identified two more suicide bombers from Friday’s attacks as Ahmad Al Mohammad and Samy Amimour.

Al Mohammad, the bomber who targeted the Stade de France, has now been definitively linked by the authorities to the Syrian passport found near his body. He was born on 10 September 1990 in Idlib, Syria, according to the passport.

Paris attack: latest developments

French fighter jets have launched massive raids in Syria, targeting the Isis stronghold in Raqqa just two days after the group claimed responsibility for the attacks in Paris.

Three of the suspected terrorists have now been named: Salah Abdeslam, his brother Ibrahim Abdeslam, and Omar Ismaïl Mostefai. Mostefai, 29, was one of three men who blew himself up, killing 89 people in the bloodiest scene of the carnage.
